When your occupation or your French can invite you ahead of your score

Since 2023, IRCC has run Express Entry draws that invite candidates by category rather than by score alone. Healthcare workers, STEM professionals, tradespeople, transport workers, educators and French speakers have been invited at cut-offs that are often below those of general draws. We find out which categories you fit and position your profile to be selected.

Category-based selection lets the Minister set categories that support economic goals, then run draws that invite only candidates in the Express Entry pool who meet the category criteria. Categories have included healthcare and social services, STEM, trades, transport, agriculture and agri-food, education and French-language proficiency, and IRCC revises the list from time to time. Within a category, candidates are still ranked by CRS score, but because the group is smaller the cut-off is often lower than in a general draw.

Eligibility for an occupation-based category depends on your NOC code. You generally need at least six months of continuous full-time, or equivalent part-time, work experience in an eligible occupation within the last three years, in Canada or abroad. The work must match the NOC’s lead statement and main duties, not just the job title. The French-language category is different: it turns on your test results, generally a minimum of NCLC 7 in all four abilities on an approved French test, regardless of occupation.

Category strategy is about making sure your profile is classified correctly and can be proved. A mis-coded NOC, a reference letter that does not describe the duties, or a French score one band short means you are not in the category at all. We audit the profile against the category criteria, fix what can be fixed, and prepare the evidence so the e-APR survives scrutiny after the invitation.

Who this is for

  • Nurses, physicians, pharmacists, personal support workers and other healthcare or social services professionals
  • Engineers, developers, data professionals and other STEM occupations
  • Electricians, plumbers, carpenters, welders and other skilled tradespeople
  • Transport, agriculture and education workers in occupations IRCC has targeted
  • Candidates with strong French test results, whatever their occupation
  • Express Entry candidates whose CRS score has not been reached in general draws

What we do

  • Identify every category you may qualify for based on your NOC code, work history and language results
  • Verify your NOC classification against the lead statement and main duties, and correct it where it is wrong
  • Advise on French testing where it could open the French-language category and add CRS points at the same time
  • Prepare reference letters and employment evidence that clearly establish category eligibility
  • Create or update your Express Entry profile so it is captured by the category draws that apply to you
  • File the e-APR after an ITA with proof of the category requirements as well as the core program requirements

How it works

  1. 1

    Category audit

We review your work history, NOC codes and language results against the current categories and tell you which ones you fit.

  2. 2

    Profile alignment

We correct classification issues, plan any French test or documentation needed, and update your profile so category draws capture it.

  3. 3

    Draw monitoring

We watch IRCC’s draws and category announcements and adjust your strategy as categories and cut-offs change.

  4. 4

    ITA and e-APR

When you are invited, we prepare and file the complete application within 60 days, with evidence that proves the category eligibility you claimed.
